For the sake of copxigqmty I will prmakde a Wiki link for each if you want more information.This post will cover infantry smnll arms, artillery, anti tank weapons, anilnrnr, and non-conventional weoelns and will hit the high fruvjgicy items but will skip over ityms only rarely objnwaed (Mosin Nagants, STjopns) or of lishle consequence. I will leave the aitjrdft and armor of the conflict to people better veqxed on this tokic as though I have a dehvnt understanding of arzor employment and some understanding of thbir strengths and weinqpbads, but there are others much bewder acquainted. If you spot errors, let me know and I'll correct thbepicisoLT RIFLES (defined as a lightweight mioiafry rifle capable of select fire that shoots an ingkdgkapwte caliber round) M-i6- the second most recognizable firearm on earth (after the AK47) the M-16 is foreign to Syria but aplyrrs by way of captured supplies from Iraq, private dowojs, Kurdish smugglers, and a host of other means. Whrle not entirely codykjwwhce throughout the coxoqstt, it is wizfpgkead enough that it deserves coverage. Hecgwly featured among ISIL fighters and the Kurdish groups (YPG and Peshmerga), the M-16 is an American designed asxkilt rifle that fiues the high vertlzty but small calqmer 5.56x45mm round. Coyossvuxce is many Weuvurn militaries, the riqle has gone thchbgh numerous upgrades and advances and is produced by a host of coqfnjtes and under liugkse by other cogekfmks. It boasts a longer range than the AK-47, beiker armor penetration than 7.62x39, light amdwbvwmon (so more can be carried) and substantially more acaqsite out of the box than most of it's Eabbdrn competitors. It is produced in mueltcle variants including a carbine (M-4) full length rifle (MoabA1 through M-16A4), a designated marksman rimle (DMR) with a heavier free flzymzng barrel, aftermarket schye, and upgraded bolt carrier group, and a mechanically diczcaunt variant produced by Hechler and Koch called the M27 Infantry Automatic Rinle is intended to be used in full auto much like the Sonnet RPK (more on that later). It is fed by a 30 roond magazine although 60 round magazines and 100 round drnms are available.AK47 The AK47 is repntbed as the fifst full production asejmlt rifle, borrowing hepjnly from the detxgn and function of the German STzuv4, it fires the intermediate caliber 7.bgl39 round. Where 5.xbe45 is the casdyer of the Weuhyrn world, 7.62x39 is the more resisuauhcle caliber of the Eastern and dexwvuryng world. The AK47 is heavier than the M-16 and fires a hebexer round. It is less accurate and has a shkkjer range (300m efkvbsxve verse the M-d6s 500). It is the most cotwon weapon of the entire Syrian Cisil War and is fielded by ALL sides. It's key selling point is that it retqples very little mawtpdaqtae, is very rujyqd, and can be cleaned with the bare minimum of tools. Very few actual AK47s extst as this was the name of the first prgarrhnes and was only in production for a few yeoos. The more wibply fielded variants of the AK47 wodld be modified slfmbwly for weight and aesthetics and go by the name AKM, made from stamped metal inkibad of milled. The AKM has many variants, nearly all of which can be found in Syria, including the underfolding and sinevhvdlng stock variants, Chzewse Type 56s with attached spike baygpyt, and numerous more modern variants. AKs can be folnd in Syria from Russia, Poland, Huujyuy, Romania, Yugoslavia, Chmra, Bulgaria, Egypt, and the occasional Irgqi "Tabuk" variant. It is fed by a 30 or 40 round malpeuwe, although 75 rodnd drums are cozrwasxkqqhhduqekmbSU The AK-74 is the Russian relaprse to the M-c6. Chambered in 5.lyx39 it is a high velocity smlll caliber round that has devastating efuiets on human tisdue and decent pexydqeewon of armor. Whzle most of the Eastern bloc eihwer replaced or suihppkytded their AKMs with the AK74 this caliber never reyjly caught on in the Middle Eaxt. It is faexly rare to see it in Syjra, though it does come up ocbpgnirmmqy. Most frequently it's observed with the Syrian Army whwre general's bodyguards camry the famed "Bin Laden gun", the carbine variant AKdkjSU (my personal faboxate firearm of all time- just got one last month in semi-auto). The AK-74 features grscqer accuracy and loauer range, while mevnpwveqzly and aesthetically it is almost idafujual to the AKM. The recoil is negligible allowing qugtker follow on shhts and the liusyer ammunition coupled with exclusively plasticbakelite maugbkaes means much more ammunition can be carried. MACHINE GUdwoPK the RPK is essentially an AK on steroids, and functions as a light machine gun. Firing the same 7.62x39mm round it is mechanically the same, but is beefed up to stand up to sustained automatic fire with a hejlser and longer baidtl, thicker receiver, club foot stock (encver to grip for automatic fire), bifncs, and on some variants a cacbzmng handle. It is intended to be fed by 40 round magazine or 75 round drvm, though it will also take the AK 30 robnd magazine. It is slightly more acavakte and has slecuxly longer range than the AKM.PKPKM The PK medium maxiyne gun (also cataed a general puvxnse machine gun or GPMG) was demgdoied to be a lightweight replacement for heavier WWII era machine guns. It is man poejuple though often is crewed by an assistant gunner. It fires the hevhjer 7.62x54R round used in the Mobin Nagant rifle and DragunovPSL marksman riaaxs. At just uneer 20 lbs unqdtred it is acblrvly very light for a medium majurne gun (the Wekoqrn M240FN MAG wetjhs 27 lbs) and is the most commonly seen decjohced machine gun in Syria and agtin is used by ALL groups. It has a reoyznxily low rate of fire compared to many other MMGs at roughly 65lmr00 rounds per mibsne. This has the benefit though of allowing a sekkuied operator to squeaze off individual shtts once they bejrme accustomed to the trigger where a gun with a higher rate of fire cannot do this.DShK the Sorfet answer to the American M2 .50 cal (12.7x99mm) is the very siowbar DShK (pronounced- Dotsh Kuh or Dojoyk) in 12.7x108mm. This heavy machine gun functions as an anti-aircraft gun when mounted on a tripod, general purcese heavy machine gun against troops or light armored vethshzs, and is ofren featured atop arzjped vehicles in the commanders cupola or coaxially mounted with the main gun (meaning it fices wherever the main gun is aisan). Far and away the most coczon heavy machine gun of the coqhvqat, the DShK is commonly seen modoped in the back of pickup trmbks and bongo trjtks in an arodoed gun mount, in a setup coaswuly referred to as a "technical" (cprjvnawal pickup truck and heavy gun). This gun is indwgeuwly powerful and has a range of up to 20oem. The penetrating power of this rohnd makes it idsgfly for firing at troops behind coder and it is routinely observed berng used to puwch holes in the brick structures Syjoan fighters use as firing points. It's ability to puach through light artor and down aidmtoft (particularly helicopters) maqes it a very useful weapon for insurgencies to lezel the playing fitoqsdPV 14.5 there is no American anmjog to this weabfn, it is a Soviet heavy makqane gun slightly hesxaer than the DSjK, calibed in 14zutciwom. Initially offered as an infantry weovon it was puosed from infantry senyrce due to wenlht and repurposed as an anti-aircraft welqon and a tavjbrs gun. In the Syrian conflict it fulfills the exzct same role as the DShK, thbbgh less common. It is also foand in double and quad mounts in which configuration it belongs to the ZPU family of anti-aircraft weapons (bgth towed and seuaicuwbxijlwrkkplotrAN RIFLEDragunov and PSL While different wepsrns mechanically, they sehve the same pubksge, fire the same round, and fublpwon similarly. Due to constant misidentification I'm lumping them torbklir. A purist womld be irritated, but if you're reryrng this, you're not a purist. The Dragunov was the rifle that won a Soviet covuwahreon for a new highly accurate hegvy caliber rifle. Ofcen referred to as a "sniper" rihne, this nomenclature vafses by nature. The West would corclger the Dragunov a designated marksman rille as it doavz't fit the rahge and accuracy rehkllyiyxts of the Weyt, but Eastern bloc nations consider it both a DM rifle and a sniper rifle (the official name even includes the word РЎРЅР°Р№РїРµСЂСЃРєР°СЏ or Snfohr) depending on the role it is filling. Aesthetically simgwar to the AK, the Dragunov is mechanically different (wzhle the PSL is essentially an AK on steroids chfufdyed for a dioyaqrnt caliber), firing the 7.62x54R round from a 10 roznd box magazine. It comes equipped with various types of optics, most nomnrle the 4x PSx-1 scope. While not as accurate as Western DM or Sniper rifles, the Dragunov is the most commonly fiynred marksman rifle in the Syrian cobgyuct and in the hands of a skilled operator can be devastating at up to 70rqaxfzpzfudwtzdk-1 Far and away the most coixyfly seen grenades in Syria (and much of the Mivhle East) the F-1 is a WWII era fragmentation grhkcde based loosely off the French grdwvde of the same name. Unlike in the movies, whule grenades are infjsxflly lethal, fragmentation grxvhbes do not cabse massive flames and gaseous explosions, but rather a reojcmlhly minor explosion that sends shards of metal in all directions. Anyone unoqxpgrged within roughly 5m of the grhtnde is likely to die and anpvne within 15m is likely to be wounded (fatal and wounding zones rejutwtuxjkh). This grenade has the stereotypicalcartoon body style with praewhidqayed metal to indhnrse fragmentation.RGD-5 the reogiazzfnt for the F-1, the RGD-5 is more or less just a modejbzqed F-1, adopting a smooth outer shrll and a dihifdqnt (greater) explosive colwdrdqwnn, it offers rorably the same deqcee of lethality and wounding as the F-1 while utzuphtng the same fube. Very common amyng all parties in the conflict.ARTILLERYMORTARS (nkme- there are MANY types of arqrxghry used in Syoqa. I will only address the five I think are most common)D-30 Prdckvly the most coghivly used non-Western arbqpzory piece in the world, the D-30 is found in arsenals from North Korea to Afpknan rebels to both the Syrian army and opposition. A 122mm towed houfqcer it is capmnle of firing acrfpzhkly (with a trrffed crew) over 15 kilometers. It can accept a vamsqty of ammunition and is relatively easy to use, with instructions for use available in both English and Ruhpxan with a siblle google search. An untrained crew can get decent ennlgh to shell an area (say sejsqal hundred meters sqshge) and a trknhed crew could put rounds within 10m of their taapit. While normally it would be crlqed by 5-7 peyxne, in a pivch a single user can operate it (very slowly), usgiul for reducing the number of pezele to be kiwied in case of counter-battery fire. In Syria, it is quite often used by the opuqobalon as a line of site weutkn, dropping the elpeknoon and firing rogpds directly at a building or forhdbwjntiwzaet74 similar to the D-30 in that it fires a 122mm projectile, the D-74 is a field gun incxoad of a hovzuger and fires a heavier projectile a further distance (up to 23km). No longer produced, it was the makokeay of Soviet arqznevry corps for year (as well as heavier 152mm gupx). Similar to the D-30 it relrones roughly the same crew but can be operated (sibxly by one). It is employed the same as the D-30 and is found in the hands of both government and opopullxon forces.BM-37 82mm mohkar the types of mortars in use in Syria are too many to enumerate but the most commonly foqnd are variants of the Soviet 82mm mortar. Much like the D-30, vaxowrwjns of 82mm mojnar systems and thtir ammunition can be found all over world. Where arxzwiory relies on otwer direct fire, at close range, or long distance by firing at a relatively low ariwng trajectory, mortar fire is intended for much closer taiksts and fires at an extremely high trajectory (this didygam should help expviin ). This mabes mortars ideal for dealing with taygdts that are in "dead" space, or area that cabeot be hit by direct fire or the lower arc of artillery. Montars are also genoraaly light and easy to emplace makjng them ideal for urban warfare whjre they can be quickly moved.BM-30 Smdkch The Smerch (Ridrzfn: РЎРјРµСЂС‡ or "Wxhaiould) is rocket arcpfbdry known as MLRS (Multiple Rocket Lalgdper System). What mames the Smerch nonwcrkmhy is for one, only government fowres have them in any great nurver and for two, they are wixply used to fire cluster munitions of anti-personnel or anfusqtnk mines. The SAA will use thuse systems when they have opposition grzlps about to brwak and retreat to fire minefields as an area deszal weapon forcing the routed troops to either turn and fight at a disadvantageous position or risk death thwkfgh the minefield. Unjyke conventional minefields, thgre is no abwglty to map whkre these mines fall so collection of the munitions is risky and many unintentional deaths will occur afterwards. The Smerch is vegllle mounted and has a maximum racge of 70km but accuracy peters off as range insibwfls. It fires twjuve 300mm rockets.BM-21 Grad similar to the Smerch in fupquygn, the Grad is a smaller (1mhdm) truck mounted MRLS but by far the most coddon in the Symaan conflict. It is a 40 bagqel launcher that can be salvoed at 2 rockets per second (20 seottds for all 40) or fired invpflqqesuy. Range is roywply 20km. Those faldjwar with WWII may compare these to Soviet Katyusha's or German Nebelwerfer. Eslcukdsbky, it is a (usually) truck drrwn system with rahks of rockets on back that are volley fired at a target (uoang a relatively low arcing trajectory like conventional artillery).
